“Male writers are thought of as ‘writers' first and then ‘men'. As for female writers, they are first ‘female' and only then ‘writers.'"
Elif Shafak

The Welsh Female Writers Group continues today as a mailing list community, open to anyone who is female or non-binary and wants to connect with a network of like-minded Welsh writers. To join, simply...

Founded in 2016 by Cardiff-born actor, writer and Artistic Director Rebecca Jade Hammond, Chippy Lane Productions was created to build a community of Welsh and Wales-based artists telling authentic Welsh stories. Named after Cardiff's beloved Caroline Street — affectionately known as "Chippy Lane" — the company was born out of a desire to bring Welsh voices to stages beyond Wales.

Wales has produced some extraordinary female playwrights making their mark on the world stage — among them Katie Elin-Salt, Emily White, Siân Owen, Rachel Trezise, Catherine Chandler, Mari Izzard, Rebecca Jade Hammond, Catherine Tregenna, Manon Steffan Ros, Branwen Davies, Gillian Clarke, Hanan Issa, and Abi Morgan. Yet despite this wealth of talent, Welsh women remain significantly underrepresented in the industry.

In 2018, Rebecca established the Welsh Female Writers (WFW) Group in direct response to this imbalance. From 2018 to 2021, the group met monthly — both in person and online — for four-hour sessions offering a fun, friendly and supportive space for established and emerging female writers to workshop scenes, share work in progress, discuss writing by female authors, and develop their craft together. During that time, over 70 women took part, with writers going on to work with companies including Dirty Protest, the National Theatre of Wales, and the BBC.

“The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt."
Sylvia Plath
