A Chippy Lane Productions Play

Love Steals Us From Loneliness

By Gary Owen | Produced by Chippy Lane Productions

A night out. Friends, alcohol, a shit club, a strop — the usual.
But tonight is different. Tonight will change things forever.

Set in Bridgend, South Wales, Love Steals Us From Loneliness follows Scott and Catrin — friends of friends — whose drunken Halloween night unravels into something neither of them expected. One of Wales' foremost playwrights, Gary Owen returns to his hometown to write a darkly witty, affective and wildly funny piece of theatre that twists and turns as all great engaging theatre should. Moving between that one night and its devastating aftermath, five characters navigate love, loss and grief with raw, unsparing honesty — from a karaoke bar glittering under a disco ball to the quiet wreckage left behind.

In keeping with Chippy Lane Productions' ethos of championing Welsh writing, it seems perfectly fitting that our first project should be a Gary Owen piece of theatre — and we are proud to present the first professional English production of this celebrated play. Be prepared to leave contemplating love, loss, grief — and whether you're a "Townie" or "Valley Commando"?

"A warm and surprisingly uplifting anthem to youth, doomed, drunk, directionless or otherwise — there's no doubting the genuine feeling underpinning the writing, or the earthy poetry glittering amongst the foul-mouthed chat."

Exeunt Magazine

"Honest and unflinching — when it hits its stride it feels vivid and truthful, its key moments bleary, leary and blurred, but occasionally outlined in neon. Just like one of those truly memorable nights out."

Exeunt Magazine

"The realism of the approach is painful yet familiar — many of the audience left in tears."

A Younger Theatre

"Engaging, moving performances rooted in reality."

Quench Magazine (Cardiff Student Media), Chapter Arts Centre

"This play teaches you that love permeates through all relationships and inevitably softens us to sands of sadness, never to be whole again."
